Tips For Buying Variable Rate Spreaders

By Amy Burns

The fertilizer spreader has been standard equipment used to fertilize lawns and farms. Farmers and homeowners prefer using it since it spreads the fertilizer evenly as compared with traditional broadcasting methods. There are quite a few aspects that one should take note when buying such products. Here are tips for buying variable rate spreaders to consider.

Decide on which type suits your needs. You have quite a lot of different kinds of spreaders to consider. The main sorts include the broadcast and the drop machines. As its names suggest, the broadcaster has a fan that propagates the fertilizer over the lawn as it passes along a surface. The drop spreader operates with a long bar with hoppers that drop the fertilizer beneath the tool.

Consider the size of your lawn or farm. For small yards, homeowners should consider a handheld spreader or a mini pusher. Most people favor the handheld since it does not take quite a lot of time to prepare. They are also budget friendly. Those with large lawns or commercial parks should look for large equipment that can cover large spaces. Some of the spreaders are big enough to the point of needing a tractor to pull them along.

Compare the automated or manual machines. Automated machines are ideal for people who have quite large lawns or farms to cover. However, they need someone who can maintain precision since they might fail to work as expected if not controlled adequately. The manual machine is suitable for much smaller lawns or farms since the operator can efficiently operate them without quite a lot of hassle.

Take note of the weight and balance. Consider lightweight and ergonomically designs that are comfortable to pull or push without inducing a lot of stress on the back or shoulder. It is also necessary to consider its balance to avoid tipping once you load fertilizer on the spreader.

Look for equipment with the right capacity. You can get a middle, large or small sized spreader in the market. The medium spreader is a reasonable choice since it does not carry enough fertilizer to spread in a large area. One has to refill the spreader time to time to meet the needs of a specific area. Even so, they are quite comfortable to operate compared with large hoppers that can accommodate large capacities. Some people prefer large hoppers since they do not require refilling to cover a given area.

Take note of your calibration methods. You have to calibrate the spreader to maintain its efficiency. Focus on aspects such as the rotating speed of the fan, your speed, and the hopper size. The broadcast types have mechanisms that people can use to adjust to the required size. Repeat the procedure as many times as possible until you meet the right calibration.

Learn how to maintain the spreader. There are a couple of aspects such as lubrication, and repair that one has to consider to maintain the spreader in good condition. Look for quality products when considering such types of maintenance measures. Besides that, seek help from a professional if you are not in a position to handle some of the steps.
