The Benefits Of Invasive Species Control Using Goats

By Mary Campbell

In every country, there are invasive species that grow out of control. The control of these species has been in most cases cause stress among many governments. This is because the techniques that are adopted are either ineffective or they have very bad consequences. However, with time there have been made new discoveries that have assisted in the control of these plants. Among the strategies that are now being adopted is the use of a goat. If you find a goat gazing in an area and you are shocked, then you should know that it is being used as a control measure. Why use goats? What do you stand to gain through invasive species control using goats?

The technique as applied is not just effective but also very efficient. The goats are known to eat almost everything and survive what other animals cannot. This is inclusive of poisonous plants such as poison ivy and the like. In an entire area, the goats consume almost everything and this aids in the invasion massively. Due to the efficiency of this technique, the government has adopted it and encouraged other farmers to adopt the same.

Normally when animals are grazing they eliminate whatever plants you may not need around you. The excretion leads to the re-growth of the same unwanted plants when the seeds finally drop. The invasion becomes as it was before and therefore no permanence of a solution. This is not the same for goats. The ingestion of their food permanently destroys any trace of seedlings and subsequently the plants are damaged for good.

This technique is within the range that one can be in a position to undertake comfortably and without any financial strain. The most common way that has been noted is the hiring of the goats from a grazer for a specific time and once the work is complete they are sent back to their owner. Most grazers will give an affordable rate for this task.

In any plant growth, the use of pesticides as a control measure is very common. It however has very many severe consequences on the soil. The land as well as the air is polluted which may eventually make the land bare. The use of goats to control the unwanted plants will ensure that this pollution is not too much.

Another common method of getting rid of unwanted plants is by uprooting them manually. It is not only time consuming but also erodes the soil. The use of goats will not erode your soil and they will also provide manure for your plant growth. This is also a healthy way of ensuring proper plant growth.

When you are located in a steep and wood area, you may not use machines because these areas are inaccessible. However, a goat can easily move around these areas which make them very convenient.

Invasion is almost always unavoidable. The methods you pick should be environment friendly in the least as we are living in a time where pollution is at its peak. The use of the goat as a control method caters for the environment conservation. This article acts as a guide in highlighting these benefits.
