Important Information On Invasive Species Control Using Goats

By Jessica Cox

There are different species known to develop exponentially and even prosper in severe weather conditions. This makes them difficult to handle. Different research institutes and state departments have been heading the search to find a reliable and effective solution to manage species that are not native. A few institutes have recommended invasive species control using goats.

Invasive types can either be animals or plants whose origins are not of that particular area but result in extreme impact to the bioregion they encroach. They are threatening to biological diversity and cause loss of land in different land masses. For example, browsers can be really effective in suppressing non-native vegetation if they have covered a large area of land utilized by them.

However, this might only be limited to use of goats as some forms are poisonous but, goats are known to have natural ability that resist poisonous enzymes in poisonous plants. This makes them survive what other animals cannot. A goat is known to consume everything. A flock can eat poisonous plant in an entire area due to this ability, and they can be adopted as controlling method.

Some animals eat seeds and later excrete the seeds as a whole, which allows them to regrow and spread. This is always a challenge in control of certain weeds and introduced species. But flocks are special in that once they consume such seeds; the seeds are completely destroyed by the digestive system of the goats and cannot regrow again. The most efficient way of controlling such forms of plants is to destroy the seeds, and that is why a flock is effective.

This technique is extremely cost-effective because the flock can be hired for people who do not have many goats. Also, individuals who are incapable of purchasing a flock can hire them so as to graze them on their farm. Following the consumption of the non-native species, they can be given back to their owner. Moreover, renting a flock can be relatively affordable because the owner gains food for his flock in the process. In contrast to applying chemicals, utilizing the flock is normally effective and cheaper.

Flocks are biological methods and they have a lot of benefits. The flocks can change weeds into better useful products and they can be grazed together with a flock of cattle. Goats can tolerate plants compounds that are not primary. These animals graze in an ununiformed manner but using their hind legs they can feed on trees that are taller and branches. Their jaws are strong to ensure that they chew stems well.

Typically, goats are social animals that move in masses. They restrict the growth of the plant causing its death. It is unlikely for them to cause soil erosion. Instead, they are known to elevate soil fertility contrary to other big hooved animals. Their chewing is much better and they productively remove unwanted vegetation. This technique saves the environment because chemicals are not transmitted into the air as is the case of herbicides.

Because of the different protocol signed by different leaders around the world concerning environmental management, it is prudent to adopt biological control techniques such as the use of goats to suppress the growth of infringing plants. This is due to the fact that it is cost effective contrary to mechanical techniques.
